RNW journalist arrested in Kinshasa

Journalist Anneke Verbraeken, a correspondent for Radio Netherlands Worldwide, was detained for several hours by military forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday.

Verbraken was arrested in a hospital in Kinshasa while filming people who had died as a result of electoral violence. Four people have died since Friday, police said.

Verbraeken was released following meditation by the Dutch embassy.

She is a correspondent in the Great Lakes region for Radio Netherlands Worldwide and the Dutch magazine Vrij Nederland.

Her lawyer in the Netherlands, Jan Hofdijk, said that she had been filming with a South African cameraman who was also arrested. He said other foreigners had been arrested too. "The situation is very tense, Hofdijk said.
