More about:

Aveseh Asough, a Radio Netherlands Worldwide producer based in Abuja, Nigeria, has won the prestigious AFRICAST prize for Best Radio Discussion programme.

About 44 entries were received from across Africa for different categories: Best Drama (Radio/ TV), Best Youth Programme (Radio/TV), Best Script (Radio/TV), Best Discussion (Radio/TV).

Taboo breaking
Ms Asough’s programme, dealing with infertility in Africa, touches on an almost taboo subject on the continent. With experts from two African countries, it discusses how infertility affects families in Africa.

Selection criteria, according to the independent jury in Abuja, where an awards ceremony was held on Wednesday, included content, structure, good links, and sound quality.

The programme is part of Radio Netherlands’ Africa in Progress thirty minute thematic show produced in partnership with hundreds of radio stations in Africa. It can be downloaded from the Radio Netherlands Africa website and is made available on CD for partner stations. It is produced partly in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and the RNW Africa Desk in the Netherlands.

Exchange of ideas
The programme aims to contribute to the exchange of ideas on the continent, with inspiring speakers from all corners of Africa.

Ms Asough was trained in part at the Radio Netherlands Training Centre and has been an Africa in Progress producer for several years.

In a recent consultation meeting with Radio Netherlands Worldwide, partner stations in Africa expressed interest in receiving more programmes on social taboos in African societies.
