Polygamy: Blessing or Burden?

Published on : 17 February 2010 - 4:47pm | By RNW Africa Desk (Photo: AFP)
More about:

South Africa spent 1.5 million euros on President Zuma's three wives and 20 children last year.

The spousal budget has doubled since former president Thabo Mbeki left office, said the minister in the presidency, Collins Chabane.

The president's children are defined as financially dependent until 27 years in age, if studying full-time and unmarried.

Zuma's wives receive a personal secretary and researcher, domestic and  international travel, mobile phones, equipment like laptops and printers, and a daily allowance during official trips.

Should taxpayers pay for the expenses of President Zuma's many wives since polygamy is allowed in Zulu culture?

Should Zuma be forced to have just one wife to reduce expenses?

Or is this discussion really about 'spousal budget', a ridiculous phenomenon...
