More about:

President Barack Obama has nominated a U.S. ambassador to South Sudan, the world's newest nation.

Obama picked Susan Page this week, the current deputy assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of African Affairs.

Page has held various positions in Africa, including in Rwanda, Botswana and Kenya, the White House said in a statement.

Her nomination has to be approved by Congress, which is in recess for the summer.

South Sudan got its independence last month after residents voted in January to secede from Sudan.

Its sovereignty broke Africa's largest nation into two, the result of a January referendum overwhelmingly approved by voters. The referendum was part of a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of civil war between the north and the south.

Page, who has a doctorate in law from Harvard University, began her career at the State Department in 1991.
