The Nigerian cabinet has called on ailing President Umaru Yar'Adua to hand over power to his deputy.
Nigerian media report that Information Minister Dora Akunyili has asked her colleagues to withdraw a cabinet statement stating that President Yar'Adua is healthy enough to stay in power. The president has been in a Saudi Arabian hospital for treatment of a serious heart condition since November 2009.
The opposition has repeatedly urged the president to hand over to Vice President Goodluck Jonathan. The United States and the European Union said last week that Nigeria must put an end to the uncertainty caused by the president's absence.
