Some of Nigeria's leading media groups have told President Umaru Yar'Adua to transfer powers to his deputy or resign within a week, adding to the pressure over the ailing leader's prolonged absence.
Owners of 17 media outlets, including newspapers The Punch and Vanguard, published a joint statement on Wednesday saying that parliament should begin impeachment hearings if Yar'Adua did not concede power.
The president, who has been in a Saudi Arabian hospital for more than two months, has refused to hand over executive powers to Vice President Goodluck Jonathan. A federal court has ruled that the vice president can perform Yar'Adua's duties, but cannnot be acting president.
