Niger Delta rebels threaten oil companies

Published on 15 March 2010 - 6:47pm
More about:

Nigerian rebel movement MEND has threatened to carry out new attacks against oil companies in the Niger Delta. Two car bombs exploded there today, in the city of Warri, apparently to highlight the threat.

Warning of these blasts was given in advance and initial reports said there were no casualties, however, unconfirmed reports now claim that one person was killed and several were injured. The bombs exploded at a government building where senior regional administrators and officials were meeting for a conference on the current amnesty programme for rebels.

MEND, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, called off its unilateral truce in January in protest at the government's implementation of the amnesty programme.
