New ceasefire in Darfur

Published on 18 March 2010 - 2:42pm
More about:

The Sudanese government has again agreed a ceasefire with an important rebel group in Darfur. This time it is the Liberation and Justice Movement, a recently formed federation of ten rebel groups. The LJM leaders signed a ceasefire and a framework agreement to hold further talks about a peace treaty.

A few weeks ago, the government agreed a ceasefire with the largest rebel group in Sudan, the Justice and Equality Movement. It was agreed that a comprehensive peace treaty would be agreed by Monday this week, but this was not achieved. Fifteen Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) leaders were arrested on Wednesday, not long after being released as part of the temporary agreement.

Civil war has been raging in Darfur since 2003. More than 300,000 people have died.
