The Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga will pressure the Dutch government to give up their recent ban on the qat trade. Odinga promised this to a group of petitioning qat farmers, according to the Kenyan radio station Capital FM.
The Netherlands announced earlier this month a ban on the trade in qat, a stimulant that suppresses fatigue and hunger. In The Netherlands, qat leaves are primarily used and traded by Somalians.
After the announcement of this ban, Kenyan media reported that the country would lose around 3 million euros in export earnings.
