Israel's PM stands by his armed forces

Published on 12 October 2009 - 9:32pm
More about:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he will never permit Israeli commanders or armed forces' personnel to be judged by the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

In a speech to the Israeli parliament, he sharply criticised the recent United Nations report about Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip at the beginning of the year. The report, written by South African lawyer Richard Goldstone, states that Israel committed war crimes in its attack on Palestinian militants.

Mr Netanyahu said Israel had the right to protect itself and that he did not want those who helped it do so to appear before a judge.

The United Nations Security Council will offer its opinion of the Goldstone report in a few days.
