Iran bans opposition newspaper

Published on 17 August 2009 - 11:53am
More about:

In Iran, the newspaper, Etemad-e Melli, has been temporarily banned. It is run by Mehdi Karoubi, one of the leaders of the opposition. The ban is said to follow reports in the paper of the torture and rape of members of the opposition being held in prison.

They were jailed after taking part in demonstrations against the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a few months ago. Dozens of people were killed during the protests.

Iran's conservative leaders were furious with Mr Karoubi's reports that both men and women protesters had been raped and tortured in prison. In Sunday's edition of the paper, he pledged to investigate the allegations thoroughly.
