Here’s what the World Cup did for us

More about:
Was the World Cup the turning point for South Africa’s ‘historically disadvantaged’ or a ‘living monument of Fifa’s imperialism’? South Africans from all walks of live explain what the World Cup has done for them.

Reverend Templeton Mbekwa tries very hard to hide a grin, and fails. “We dissapointed the world by hosting a successful event. Remember, we are underdogs. Nobody rated us as people who could do it. But with the help of God and some supporting countries, we made it work. We pleased the international world, and even Sepp Blatter.”

Rev. Mbekwa remembers South Africans being united during the event. But when asked about the lasting social benefits of the World Cup, he can’t really think of anything.

So, six months later, what exactly is the legacy of the 2010 Fifa World Cup?
