Haiti presents reconstruction plan

Published on 17 March 2010 - 11:50am
More about:

An estimated 8.3 billion euros is required for the reconstruction of Haiti following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake last January.

The Haitian government has drawn up a reconstruction plan, together with international aid organisations.

The Preliminary Damage and Needs Assessment not only tackles the mammoth reconstruction operation, but it also proposes far-reaching reforms in Haiti.

The Caribbean state is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere and corruption is rife.

The proposals will be discussed at an international donor conference on 31 March in New York.

According to official figures, the earthquake on 12 January killed 200,000 people. Around 215,000 Haitians have been living in makeshift tents since then.
