Haiti polls put back amid quake chaos

Published on 3 February 2010 - 11:22am
More about:

Three weeks after a massive earthquake rocked Haiti, authorities postponed upcoming parliamentary elections amid ongoing chaos and security concerns.

The move underlined the impotence of the Haitian government in the wake of the 7.0-magnitude 12 January quake that claimed the lives of an estimated 170,000 people and destroyed most buildings.

The elections were scheduled on 28 February and 3 March to decide the fate of all 99 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, the Lower House and one third of representatives in the Senate.

Security is one of the main concerns of international relief teams and residents of the capital Port-au-Prince, where widespread looting is still taking place in the aftermath of the disaster.
