Colourful artifacts and clothes, a huge variety of delicious African cuisine and of course a couple of the hottest music acts from Africa… almost all of your senses were satisfied on Sunday at The Hague African Festival 2010.
Run by the African migrant organisation Stichting Sankofa, previously responsible for the now discontinued African Festival Delft, the festival offers world class music and is a natural meeting place for different cultures.
Blick Bassy and Kaissa (Cameroon), Meiway (Ivory Coast), Atongo Zimba (Ghana), Manou Gallo and Van Merwijks Music Machine (Ivory Coast and Netherlands) and Dr Sakis (Congo) graced one by one the main stage with their enigmatic presence. In true African style, they gave amazing performances to the pure joy of the audience.
The festival also hosted a lively and varied African Market. In dozens of stands, a wide diversity of products were on sale. From traditional wooden chairs to necklaces, statuettes, and djembes.
When it comes to the taste buds, one was spoilt for choices.
In the African Village, debates and presentations took place during the whole day.
The Kid's Corner offered an interactive programme for children including workshops. They learned how to play drums, make the craziest shapes and forms with balloons and got their faces painted.
The weather was pleasant, the mood festive, thus we can surely say this 2010 edition of the festival was a great success.
Radio Netherlands was there and below is an impression of the day in photos and music:
Watch out for the Music Special about the Festival coming up in June/July in our Radio Shows – Bridges with Africa and L’Afrique en Action. Exclusive interviews with the artists and of course lots and lots of great African music.
