Gaspard looks for a wife

Published on : 26 March 2010 - 6:42pm | By Sophie van Leeuwen (Photo: Sophie van Leeuwen)
More about:

Out of nowhere he appears in front of me - “Hey Sister!” he says. I am looking for Rwandese pop music. He knows where to find that. I follow Gaspard to a courtyard behind the main shopping street, into a very tiny photo studio.

While a friend of his copies music for me from his computer, we watch video clips with hot guys and pretty shy girls. Smooth R&B, swinging afrobeats mix with gospel, also very popular in Rwanda. “Wow”, yells Gaspard when another pretty woman passes by dances on screen.

A customer comes in for a passport photo. The man dressed in a light blue suit sits on a chair and checks his hair. Gaspard and me hide ourselves in a corner of the photo studio, which is literally not bigger than two by two meters. Flash!!

“Love,” says Gaspard – while we are standing so close together - “is the most important thing in life.” Me being now curious ask: “Are you in love?” Gaspard gives an avoiding laugh. He shakes his head and sighs. “Rwandan women are tough. Very tough…” O why? I ask. “Women in Rwanda do not look into their hearts. They only take your assets into account.”

So Gaspard wants to get rich. He studies economics and management. "Great!" I shout. But he doesn’t expect to find a job. A lot of Rwanda’s young people study. The state also gives scholarships to orphans of the genocide. But Gaspard says there are no jobs. Open his own business? "You need capital for that" he says. And that he does not have.

He looks sad. Gaspard stares deep into my eyes. “I do not love Rwandan women. I love white women.” I protest loudly. I am ten years older! And I have a boyfriend!

Gaspard starts to sing and points to a gospel video clip. He sings: "Jesus has provided a miracle in Rwanda.” O yes, I ask. What kind of miracle? That, Gaspard doesn’t know either. My CD’s are burned. As an extra I get a sexy photo of Gaspard.

We have become friends. On Facebook.
