Gambia accused of secret detention

Published on 11 February 2010 - 12:00pm
More about:

Human rights groups have accused Gambia of locking up prisoners in extra secured prison cells without trial.

A report released by Amnesty International and Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) indicates that the detainees were jailed in secret prisons in the capital Banjul and further inland. They were reportedly forced to drink hallucinogenic medicin adn confess to witchcraft.

Amnesty and WARDC did not disclose the identity of the prisoners or for what offences they are being held.  It is clear, however, that some of the prisoners are Nigerian.

The activists have urged the Nigerian government to demand the guarantee that no further human rights violations will take place in Gambia. They also want Nigeria to ask for compensation for the victims of torture.
