Former South Korean president Kim Dae-jung has died aged 83 after a long illness. He was president from 1997 to 2003 and was the first leader of the opposition to become head of state.
During his term of office, he introduced a policy of rapprochement with Communist arch-enemy North Korea. This 'Sunshine Policy' led to a summit in 2000 with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. President Kim was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize later that year.
