Flu causes panic on island of Diomede

Published on 9 November 2009 - 1:34pm
More about:

Panic has broken out on an island near Alaska following an outbreak of flu.

All 130 residents on the remote island of Diomede are infected with the A(H1N1) virus, known in the Netherlands as Mexican flu. The US has sent helicopters to bring in a medical team and medicines.

Three seriously ill patients have been flown to the city of Nome in Alaska. The island lies in the Bering Strait between the mainlands of Russia and America.

It is only accessible by helicopter in the winter. Regular flights were halted four months ago because of the high costs.

Seems fishy how these people caught it. Such a remote island and a cold one too. Could it be some people or country are spreading it throughout the atmosphere? I don't know but it sure seems strange.
