Fire at Radio Netherlands broadcasting station

Published on : 25 December 2009 - 9:30am | By RNW News Desk
More about:

Fire has broken out at a Radio Netherlands Worldwide broadcasting installation in Madagascar. Firefighters from the Madagascan capital Antananarivo managed to bring the blaze under control within hours.

The fire destroyed the high voltage circuit breaker equipment, so broadcasts from Madagascar will be suspended for at least three days and possibly up to a week. This means that large parts of Africa and Southeast Asia will be unable to receive RNW shortwave broadcasts for the time being. Satellite and Internet broadcasts are not affected.

Radio Netherlands Worldwide provides news, background and cultural information to millions of people throughout the world via radio, television and the internet. This is done from a Dutch-European perspective, in ten languages.

The station ensures that people have access to objective information, news and background. Via shortwave, satellite, internet and thousands of partner organisations.

Our Programme Distribution Department is arranging some temporary relays via other transmitter sites while Madagascar is off the air. The latest details are in the Media Network Weblog.

For our English programmes, the following frequencies are operating:

1400-1600 UTC: 12080 kHz to South Asia

1800-1900 UTC: 11655 kHz to Central and East Africa

1800-2000 UTC: 12045 kHz to East Africa

1900-2100 UTC: 7425 kHz to Central and East Africa

2000-2100 UTC: 11655 kHz to West Africa
