From today, European Union manufacturers will no longer be allowed to sell old-fashioned light bulbs of 100 watts or above, or any soft-tone, non-energy saving bulbs.
The ban will be extended each year, with the sale of old-fashioned light bulbs becoming a thing of the past in three years' time. Use of non-energy saving bulbs will not actually be made illegal.
The measure is designed to tackle the EU's CO2 emissions. The Dutch environmental information organisation, Milieu Centraal, says the average household will save 75 euros a year by changing to energy saving bulbs.
