A protestant church in New York founded by Dutch colonists centuries ago has for the first time offered apologisies for the massacre and deportation of Native Americans.
Collegiate Church was founded in 1628 as a Dutch Reformed Church in what then was called New Amsterdam. During a reconciliation gathering with Lenape Indians, Pastor Robert Chase said: "We have used your natural resources, we have dehumanised your people and have shown no respect for your culture. With pain in our hearts we remember our role in these events." The meeting was held in front of the Museum of the American Indian in southern Manhattan close to where Dutch colonists built their first fort.
