Denmark tops press freedom list

Published on 20 October 2009 - 3:14pm
More about:

Denmark tops a list for press freedom in the world. At the bottom of the list are Iran, Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea where there is no press freedom at all. The list has been compiled by the non-governmental organisation Reporters without Borders.

The organisation is concerned that press freedom is gradually deteriorating in France, Italy and Slovakia as a result of new legislation. It also says Israel now has less press freedom than Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon.

The Netherlands has climbed from 18th place to seventh on the list, while the United States has moved up from 36th place to 20th. Reporters without Borders puts this down to the so-called 'Obama effect', as President Barack Obama has demonstrated more respect for press freedom than his predecessor George W Bush.
