Darfur rebel leader Bahar Idriss Abu Garda has been indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.
He is accused of war crimes in the restive Sudanese region. Bahar Idriss Abu Garda was allegedly involved in looting and killed 12 soldiers of an African Union peacekeeping force in September 2007.
Bahar Idriss Abu Garda says he travelled to The Hague voluntarily to prove his innocence. He is the first suspect to appear before the court on charges of war crimes in Darfur, where a brutal civil war has been raging for several years. The ICC has issued an international warrant for the arrest of Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.
