Crown prince sleepless over Mozambique row

Published on 6 November 2009 - 10:53pm
More about:

Crown Prince Willem-Alexander says he has been having sleepless nights because of the barrage of criticism about the holiday home he is building in Mozambique.

The prince was speaking during a state visit to Mexico in the company of other members of the royal family. Queen Beatrix said she has no doubts about her son's intentions. She praised Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende for the way he is handling the matter and accused some media of reporting it in a biased way. The crown prince and his wife, Princess Máxima, have been under fire for some time because of their planned holiday home in Mozambique. Critics doubt the project benefits the local population as the royal family and the cabinet maintain.
