Cartoon of the Week: Quite a threesome!

Published on : 30 October 2010 - 8:00am | By RNW Africa Desk (Cartoon: Gado)
More about:

Our series Cartoon of the Week continues and is graced this week by the talent of Tanzanian-born cartoonist Gado. He takes a peep into Mugabe's bedroom:

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe's wife is believed to have had an affair with the country's reserve bank governor Gideon Gono, a local newspaper reported last Sunday.

The Sunday Times reported that on her deathbed, Mr Mugabe's younger sister Sabina had warned him that he was being betrayed by Gono and his wife, Grace.

The newspaper reported that the affair was known among Zimbabwe's political elite. Grace Mugabe, four decades younger than her husband, has reportedly had affairs before. It is said that past lovers have diasppeared in mysterious conditions.

The newspaper quotes sources saying Mugabe was so desperate to keep the latest affair a secret he had senior police commissioner Cain Chademana, the bodyguard at his sister's deathbed, killed in August.

Mugabe and Gono have been working together since 1995 when Gono was appointed the president's personal banker. According to a senior official in Gono's office: "Mugabe trusted Gono. He even thought our boss was taking care of the first lady, keeping a protective eye on her so that she could not again be adulterous."

They have been married for more than a decade and Grace Mugabe's lavish lifestyle is no secret.
