Austria hit by severe flooding

Published on 24 June 2009 - 1:09pm
More about:

Austria has been hit by severe flooding. The regions along the German, Czech and Slovakian borders are worst hit.

The rivers Steyr, Enns, Krems and Traun burst their banks after two days of incessant heavy rain. Traffic has been seriously disrupted by the flooding, with at least 50 roads rendered impassable.

Fire brigades are working round the clock to pump out cellars and build sandbag walls. Another 10,000 soldiers are on stand-by in case the flooding gets worse. Meteorologists say the worst of the rain is over.
