African summit on refugees opens in Uganda

Published on 19 October 2009 - 3:10pm
More about:

A special African Union summit aimed at tackling the issue of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) opened in the Ugandan capital Kampala on Monday.

The five-day conference was expected to explore ways of stopping the displacement of civilians and to consider how to protect and assist the estimated 17 million refugees and IDPs on the continent.

The 600 officials attending the summit - including ministers and experts from the United Nations and international relief agencies - were expected to concentrate on the root causes of displacement,
including internal conflicts and natural disasters.

"The summit is expected to find a solution to the displacement of people on the continent and to address the problems involved in  the scenario," Ugandan Prime Minister Apollo Nsibambi said as the summit got underway.
